I’m driving across this beautiful country starting tomorrow morning and I was wondering if yall had any advice for me. For sure I’m stopping in Vegas, and then I’m pretty much winging it. I’m hoping to go through Colorado and Missouri.

I’ve done the coast-to-coast a couple times and I think it’s something every American should do. It’s the only way to truly appreciate how big and diverse this country is, both geographically and socially.
Advice: Stock up on music. There’s a lot of bad cell service in the middle of the country, so streaming may not be possible... leaving you with your choice of country music or more country music!

Do you have a passenger? Can they read maps, deal with music, feed you, et cetera? That’s one thing that was great about roadtripping with my girlfriend was that she could actually give me directions and new routes quickly instead of hemming and hawing. And she also fed me cookies. Gods damn do I love her.

Here’s a summary of a road-trip -
You’ll be incredibly pumped before you leave, then have fun for maybe an hour. Then you’ll be bored out of your mind until you’re about a half an hour from your destination.

First tip, just skip Virginia altogether. It’s kind of a shitty place. I lived there for 14 years.
Second tip, don’t speed everywhere, plan your stops close enough together that you get to enjoy the road, and can stop if something cool pops up along the way. Seriously, plan stops like 6-8 hours apart max, so if it takes you 12 hours because you had to stop at Carhenge and paint something, but you had to take a detour back to get paint, you don’t feel the pressure.

Before you go, change the oil, check all fluids, check tire pressure, etc.
Snacks at gas stations are ridiculously expensive. Stock up before you go and keep your supplies handy in a cooler.
Never pass up an opportunity to pee. If you do, you will end up stopping twice as often. Don’t drink too much and you won’t have to stop as often.
Buy a paper atlas. You never know when your cell phone is going to die or get lost and you may need to go old-school to navigate.
Stop and see some of the sights if your timeline allows it. Epic road trips are few and far between. Visiting cool places along the way make them more memorable.
Wear something comfortable.
Adjust your seating position several times a day. This makes the trip more tolerable and reduces fatigue.
Books on tape help pass the time. Audible is a great app for this and your first book is free!
Have fun!

Make sure you try and route through the Smokey Mountains in TN/NC. Of course there is the Tail of the Dragon but there are also a lot of other great roads there with less traffic and police presence. Also, some great scenic roads and hiking in the area too. You could easily spend a week there lol.

I saw someone mention music, that’s a good suggestion, but I’d counter with audiobooks. Get an Audible account, assuming you don’t already have one, and download a book or two. A good audiobook is perfect in the car. When I was younger we drove from Arizona to Michigan, to D.C., and back twice. My mom loaded us up on audibooks, and now it has become a habit for me.
If you guys like sci-fi/kinda nerdy stuff my suggestion is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Wil Wheaton narrates it and does an awesome job. It has a lot of throwbacks to 80s music, video games, shows, and other pop-culture, which makes it really fun. Pretty long book too, so helps kill a lot of the time in the more boring parts of the country.

I would imagine that you have had the car checked out
The highways in the middle of the country are REALLY empty at night and you don’t want to depend on the “Kindness of strangers”
Are you driving at night or during the day?
Have you planned on where you are going to stop to sleep?
What is your heritage? Have you checked your route against Google to ensure that you won’t be crossing enemy territory?
Do you have tools, blankets, food, water, cellphones, and a first aid kit?
Bonne chance

So you're gonna be taking either 70/64 or 40...70/64 is less landmark-y, but generally less awful (cause Arkansas sucks for construction in the summer). If you take 40, get some green chile in Albuquerque, don't speed through Texas, and enjoy 10 hours of Tennessee.

You’re welcome! I live on audiobooks, especially because I drive a lot. (46k miles on my FR-S in just over two years haha) Having a good narrator can really make a book come to life in a whole other way than reading one does, and makes the time fly by. Wil Wheaton is one of my favorite narrators too. He narrates a bunch of sci-fi books, a lot of them by John Scalzi, and does an excellent job.

Don’t get caught up in trying to “make time”. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Stop often and stretch your legs. 70-75 is usually much more comfortable than 80-85, I find myself fighting traffic MUCH less and it makes no real difference in time.
Look up fireworks legality, if they aren’t legal in your destination, or you’re coming back to California, might be worth it to go through a state that has them. Wyoming is great for them, but it looks like you’re starting too far south for that.
Don’t pack the car so full of stuff that you can’t move your seats. Having the extra space is nice on a road trip. I’ve done it both ways. Space is better. Ship some stuff, look up “small moves”.
You’ll learn to hate trucks. Don’t get close to them, they’ll crack your windshield.
Feel free to stop and grab gas even if you’re only at the quarter or half tank. Nothing sucks more than worrying you won’t make it to the next gas station.
Don’t book hotels in advance. When you’re done for the day, just stop at the next place that comes up.
Stay hydrated.
Eat at places you can’t find at home.
I’ve driven California to New York five times round trip. I really liked it.

While I do agree that car charges are great, signal is a big issue, especially in Canada. Some providers like WIND only really work in major cities, and once you’re out of them you have no signal. Looking at a cell coverage map right now, one of the driving roads west has what looks like 100 kilometres of no coverage. There are dead spots all around. And if you’re up in Northern Ontario or Quebec? Or the Territories? No coverage whatsoever. It’s always good to have a backup plan.

It’s possibly the best navigation app outside of Gmaps/Waze because of the offline component. The walking directions were always super accurate and I used it to get from one landmark in France to the next without eating up data on my prepaid sim. Same thing in LB, used it to walk from place to place and never had an issue, just download the maps on wifi and be sure you have enough storage.

My sister and her husband are on a road trip through bumblefuck Canada and twice have “gone missing” for several days. Once was a trip from Dawson up past the Arctic Circle and now from Prince George to Banff through who-knows-where. They’ve mostly only had coverage in larger towns but at least seem to pass through them every few hours.
It mostly freaks me out because they're camping and we don't know their plans, and every time they surface again they have more bear pictures. They do have paper maps though!

If you could borrow a tent and air mattress (and maybe a few other things like flashlights or a camp stove), you could camp out a few nights.
Camp sites in most small towns are crazy cheap (like $5 cheap), and put you out in the fresh air in the morning. It’s a great way to avoid hotels, but it is a bit more work and you’re not guaranteed a good night’s sleep (especially if it’s hot or full of insects or there’s some annoying noise).
But I’d also suggest to bail on the campiing idea if the weather isn’t cooperating or if the site is sketchy. I’ve had some bad nights camping when I tried to force the idea.

Living in VA for two months this year, it seemed like everyone still was speeding just as much as back home in Jersey. 70 or so in the 55 and 80 or so in 65. I mean sure that isn’t really dangerous levels of speed but I was expecting it to be different. Maybe its different in the Norfolk area than nearer to DC or further west?

I’m in NoVA, and I know you’re pretty safe going over the speed limit if it’s the flow of traffic, I guess it’s a safety in numbers kind of thing. But if you’re on an open highway on a weekend or something, you better not be caught at over 80, and have a good chance of getting pulled over for anything 10+ over.

Arby’s is everywhere on the west coast. Nothing special.
I’d recommend that a Californian eat plenty of real tacos (and/or carne asada burritos), a California-style pizza, and a gourmet burger before leaving the state. Also be sure to eat a double-double before you leave the In-N-Out region (CA, AZ, NV, UT, TX, I believe now...). The food in the vast majority of this country is very bland or excessively “interesting”, especially in flyover country and the south (Virginia is in the South). Aside from the west coast, some parts of the northeast, and Minnesota, I consider this country a near complete culinary wasteland. There are some gems, but they are very few and far between.

Bring lots of music. If you start nodding off at the wheel stop at the nearest exit and sleep in your car. If you drive through Texas, don’t speed. Don’t speed on the freeway in Virginia until you reach 66. Plan your routes to avoid rushour traffic in major cities. If you don’t have a radar detector and can’t borrow one, find someone else on the road with one and follow them. You’ll likely get at least 1 ticket and will have to avoid at least one accident.
Other than that, good luck! Also, drafting works— the best mileage I ever got in my Matrix XRS was in a 2-hour 120mph+ session following a SLK55 with a radar detector— 34mpg!

Don’t book any hotel on the way out, don’t eat at any chain restaurants, take detours as much as you like, enjoy yourself.

Mmm. Thinly-sliced pink slime soaked in liquid smoke and cooked until uniformly brown.

Sleep is for the weak. Only stop to sleep if you can’t keep your eyes open. Mainline energy drink. B.E. AGRESSIVE. Overtake like your ass is on fire. Your horn is there to let other people know that they are in your way. Stop in the sketchiest looking bar you can find, go up to the scariest looking dude, and challenge him to a poke'battle. Avoid gas station sushi and deli meats. Trust only that which comes in a plastic package or greasy paper bag.

Adult wipes are also a good way to freshen up when the plumbing and water you have available are sketchy. Flushable (septic-tank-safe) ones are a bonus. . .

Put a few extra (3+) pounds of tire pressure over recommended for the long hot stretches of road to prevent blowouts, and stop and walk around the car once an hour to ward off brain fade. Take and drink a small amount of your own favorite water to stay hydrated, and don't drink lots, or you'll have to stop and pee more than once an hour. . .

Having your car break down in the middle of nowhere on the darkest night of the year with your girlfriend waiting in the car will +wake you up fast+!
